How to Time a Whole Meal So Everything Is Ready at Once
Cooking four dishes is not four times harder than cooking one. The dishes are the easy part β most of them are twenty minutes of instructions you could follow half asleep. What is hard is making them finish together, hot, while you are also carving something and finding a serving spoon.
That is a scheduling problem, not a cooking problem, and it has a method.
Work backwards from the plate
Never plan a meal forwards. Forwards planning starts with "the chicken takes ninety minutes" and ends with green beans that have been sitting in a colander for a quarter of an hour. Start at the end instead.
- Write down the serving time. An actual clock time, not "around eight".
- Find the anchor β the dish with the longest total time, including resting. Everything else is scheduled around it.
- Subtract backwards to get the anchor's start time. That is when the meal begins.
- Place every other dish backwards from the serving time, longest first, and write the clock time each one starts.
You now have a list of clock times rather than a list of durations, and that difference is most of the battle. Durations require arithmetic under pressure. Clock times require reading.
A worked example: roast chicken for six, served at 7:30
A 1.8 kg chicken at roughly 20 minutes per pound is 80 minutes in the oven, plus 20 minutes resting. Roast potatoes need parboiling then 45 minutes. Green beans need 5. Gravy is made in the roasting tin while the bird rests.

Four dishes, one oven, and at no point are two things demanding attention in the same minute. That is not luck β it is what the backwards pass buys you.
Resting is cooking time, not slack
The single most common timeline failure is treating the rest as a buffer you can eat into. It is not. A roast that goes straight from oven to knife loses its juices onto the board, and twenty minutes of resting is twenty minutes you cannot borrow.
The good news is that resting time is the most valuable slot in the whole plan, because the oven is free and your hands are free. That is where the roast potatoes finish at high heat, the gravy gets made, and the plates go in to warm. Schedule your busiest ten minutes there deliberately.
The oven is one resource, not several
Two dishes that need different temperatures at the same time is not a timing problem you can solve by being organised β it is an impossible schedule, and you find out at 7:15.
Check for temperature collisions when you build the timeline, not when you are holding a tray. The usual fixes: pick the lower temperature and add time to the other dish, move something to the hob, cook it earlier and reheat, or accept that one dish becomes a room-temperature side. A collision found on paper is a decision. Found in the kitchen, it is a casualty.
Keep the last ten minutes almost empty
Whatever goes wrong will go wrong at the end, because that is where everything converges. Protect that window.
The rule: in the final ten minutes, you should have at most one thing that needs watching, and everything else should be finished, resting, or waiting on a low heat. If your timeline has three items landing between 7:25 and 7:30, redesign it. Move something earlier and reheat it. Nothing is worth the plating panic.
What goes cold, and how fast
Not everything needs to land at once, and knowing which dishes are patient lets you spread the load.

Cold plates are the invisible version of this problem. A hot dish on a cold plate loses more heat in thirty seconds than in five minutes of sitting in the pan.
Every estimate is optimistic
Peeling potatoes takes longer than you think. Finding the roasting tin takes longer than you think. The oven takes fifteen minutes to reach temperature, not five.
Add your buffer to the preparation, not the cooking. Cooking times are physical facts; prep times are guesses about yourself, and they are the ones that slip. In the example above, the first thirty minutes are entirely cold work β that is deliberate. It is the compressible part of the plan, and having it at the front means a late start costs you nothing.
Name your timers, and give them different sounds
Four timers all going "beep" is barely better than one. You still have to walk over and read a screen to find out which dish is calling, and you will do that at exactly the wrong moment.
Give each dish its own timer with its own name and its own alarm sound, and within one meal you will have learned them. The chicken chimes, the potatoes buzz, the beans ring. You can be at the other end of the kitchen with your hands full and still know what just finished. For the example above:

- Roast potatoes β 45 min, started 6:40
- Rest β 20 min, started 7:10
- Beans β 5 min, started 7:22
Set the long ones as you go rather than all at once, and the sequence runs itself.
Scaling up: the big-bird problem
Christmas and Thanksgiving are the same method with one difference β the anchor is enormous, and its resting time is correspondingly long. A large turkey wants 30 to 45 minutes out of the oven before carving, and it will stay hot far longer than you expect.
That is not a problem. It is the biggest gift in the timeline: a 45-minute window with a free oven and nothing to carve yet. Every side dish that needs high heat goes there. Plan it that way from the start and the day stops being frantic.
Two more things that only bite at scale. A cold oven full of cold trays recovers slowly, so add time when you load it. And per-pound rules are estimates that assume an average bird and an accurate oven β for anything large, a thermometer in the thickest part of the thigh beats arithmetic every time.
Five failures that break a timeline
- Starting the timer before the water boils. The classic, and the reason boiled eggs are so inconsistent. The clock starts when the food goes into water that is already boiling.
- Opening the oven to look. Every opening costs 10 to 15 Β°C and several minutes of recovery. If the timeline is tight, the door stays shut.
- Not accounting for carryover cooking. Meat keeps cooking after it leaves the heat β several degrees for a roast. Pull it early or you will rest it past where you wanted it.
- Prepping while something short is on. Five-minute beans are not a window to chop anything. Do it before.
- One timer for everything. Resetting the same timer between dishes means the moments you are most likely to forget are the moments you are busiest.
The short version
Write the serving time. Find the longest dish including its rest and work backwards to a start time. Place everything else backwards from the plate, longest first, until you have clock times instead of durations. Put your cold prep at the front where it can absorb a late start, put your busy work inside the resting window, and leave the last ten minutes nearly empty. Cook the green vegetables last, and warm the plates.
